qa'an : (« kaan ») the distinction, probably seen by Polo, existed with Ilan (« can » or « kan ») ; the first to take the title was Ögödäi; only Qubilai took the title as a mere epithet; the « Cinggis-qa'an » of the Secret History must be due to later tradition : Chinghiz-khan did not take this title.
