Ercolin is mentioned in the list of furs, in Polo's notices on the Kingdom of « Conci », on the Land of Darkness, and on Russia.

The word rendered squirrel in this list, is vair in the original French text.

Ercolin has received many identifications but Pelliot believes it to be a squirrel. It is not possible to connect « ercolin » phonetically with the medieaval forms of « squirrel ».

It is doubtful that « ercolin »

is equivalent to ermine in Polo's text.

There is a kind of « vair » which Pegolotti calls organni. It is not impossible that ercolin should he another form of organinus and in that case again a kind of squirrel.

See p. 643-646.

ercolini : Benedetto's translation of « ercolin », without comment. See ERCOLIN, p. 645.

See COTTON, p. 523.

« Erdir » : this incorrect form of the name of the Volga occurs in Josafa Barbaro.

See COTTON, p. 523.

« Ergene » : in Barthold, is not correct for the true name of Oryana queen.

See CAIDU, p. 126.

« Erginul » : this reading of B1, and the commentary attached to it must be eschewed.

See ERGIUUL, p. 646. ERGIUUL.

Polo, having left Kan-chou by the main road, reached Liang-chou and this is the Central Asiatic name of this town. In the Mongol text of the Secret History, it appears under the form of Äri)ä'ü, and with the Chinese equivalent Hsi-Liang, i.e. modern Liang-chou. That name has survived.

Polo's « Ergiuul » seems to represent a form *Arjü'ül, the final element of which maintained in all the Mss, is mysterious. See p. 646-647.

« Ergiuui » : (description of the yak).

See BEYAMINI, p. 96.
